 Critical Backdoor Found in XZ Utilities Used By Many Linux Distros


A critical backdoor vulnerability (CVE-2024-3094) has been found in the XZ utilities used by many popular Linux distributions. This vulnerability could allow attackers to gain unauthorized access to systems.

What is the XZ Backdoor Vulnerability?

The XZ backdoor vulnerability is a flaw in the XZ utilities that could allow attackers to execute arbitrary code on a victim's system. The backdoor was accidentally included in versions 5.6.0 and 5.6.1 of the xz libraries. It is not present in the Git distribution.

Which Linux Distributions Are Affected?

While Red Hat and Debian have stated that no stable versions of their distros are affected, some other Linux distributions are vulnerable. These include Fedora 41 and Fedora Rawhide.

What Should You Do?

If you are using a vulnerable Linux distribution, it is important to downgrade XZ Utils to an uncompromised version as soon as possible. You can find instructions on how to do this on the website of your Linux distribution vendor.
